The Sacred Duty of Parenthood
From a young age, Shivaji Maharaj was deeply devoted to his mother, with a heart full of gratitude. His mother understood her primary responsibility: not merely to provide food, clothing, and shelter—duties even animals fulfill—but to shape her child’s character and devotion to the Lord. Every day, she would narrate stories from the Mahabharataand Ramayana, immersing him in the glories and pastimes of Lord Krishna and His devotees. This spiritual nourishment molded Shivaji into a person of high moral standards, compassion, and unwavering devotion to God. His later accomplishments were deeply rooted in this early spiritual education.
The Influence of Spiritual Guidance on Great Kings
Consider the examples of great kings like Prahlada Maharaj and Parikshit Maharaj. Prahlada, even while in his mother’s womb, became a Mahabhagavat by hearing Hari Katha from Narada Rishi. This spiritual foundation shaped him into a king who led by example, demonstrating unwavering devotion and righteousness. Similarly, Parikshit Maharaj, who was raised with the deities of Krishna and immersed in chanting and hearing His glories, became a ruler of exceptional character and spirituality—a true beacon for the world to follow.
Raising the Next Generation of Leaders
If we wish to genuinely honor Shivaji Maharaj, we must emulate the way his mother raised him—by immersing our children in the teachings of the Mahabharata, Ramayana, Srimad Bhagavatam, and Hari Katha. This is how we can cultivate the next generation of great leaders. However, today’s parents often neglect spiritual education, allowing their children to be absorbed in trivial pursuits, while focusing solely on academic success. If we truly want to celebrate Shivaji’s greatness, we must follow his example: nourish our children with spiritual wisdom, associate them with saintly persons, and encourage them to hear and chant the names and glories of the Lord. Only then can we raise children with true spiritual character.
Shivaji Maharaj: A King Empowered by Devotion
As a young man, Shivaji witnessed severe injustices and persecutions under the Mogul rulers. Fueled by devotion, he stood up against these forces to protect Sanatana Dharma. His devotion was so deep that he received weapons from the Lord’s personal servants, empowering him to become a mighty king. Unlike many rulers of today, Shivaji was not attached to politics or power; his only attachment was to serving his Guru and Krishna.
Tukaram Maharaj: The True King in Shivaji’s Eyes
Despite his power and influence, Shivaji Maharaj recognized the true greatness of the Vaishnava Acharya Tukaram Maharaj. Tukaram led a simple life, without wealth or property, always immersed in hearing and chanting the glories of the Lord. When Shivaji approached Tukaram, he did so with utmost humility, falling at the feet of this great sage. Shivaji understood that Tukaram, who had conquered his mind and senses through constant devotion, was the real king. At one point, Shivaji expressed his desire to renounce his kingdom and lead a life of bhajan (devotional service). However, Tukaram instructed him to continue performing his duties as a king, but in the service of God.
