Namdev’s Service to His Mother
One day, Namdev’s mother, Gonai, became very ill. She called her son and said softly, “Nama, my body grows weak, and my heart burns with pain. You always sing to Lord Vitthal, but today, offer Him a bowl of milk on my behalf. If He truly accepts it, I will know He has heard my prayers.”
Namdev joyfully replied, “Yes, Mother. The Lord always listens to the calls of His devotees. I will offer Him milk, and He will surely drink it for you.”
He filled a golden bowl with fresh milk, placed it reverently before Lord Vitthal in the temple, and prayed, “O Panduranga, my mother suffers greatly. Please drink this milk from her hand, so that she may be comforted.”
The Lord’s Silent Test
Hours passed, and the milk remained untouched. The temple bells rang, priests came and went, but the Lord stood motionless, smiling faintly.
Namdev’s eyes filled with tears. “O Lord,” he cried, “You are called the compassionate one, the friend of the lowly! My mother has served You her whole life. Why will You not accept her offering?”
Still, the deity remained unmoving. The young saint’s heart broke. He fell to the ground before the altar and wept bitterly. “If You will not drink this milk, then let me die here at Your feet!”
The Lord Accepts the Offering
Suddenly, a gentle light spread through the temple. Lord Vitthal appeared from His image, smiling tenderly. “Nama, My child,” He said, “your love has compelled Me.”
With His own hands, the Lord took the bowl and began to drink. As the milk touched His lips, some drops spilled to the floor and flowed like pearls of nectar. When the bowl was empty, the Lord said, “Tell your mother that I have accepted her offering. Her pain shall now fade.”
Namdev’s tears turned to joy. He danced and sang before the Lord, crying, “How merciful You are, O Panduranga! You drink from the hand of the poorest devotee!”
The Mother’s Healing
Running home, Namdev told Gonai everything. “Mother, Vitthal Himself drank the milk! His lips touched the bowl!”
Gonai clasped her hands in awe. “O Lord! What mercy You have shown to Your unworthy servant!”
That very night, her fever left her, and she regained her strength. The next morning, she joined her son in kirtan, singing the glories of Panduranga.
The Lord’s Declaration
In a vision, Lord Vitthal said to Nama, “You have made Me drink, O dear one! My image may be stone to the faithless, but to you, it is alive with love. From this day forward, My temple shall bear the mark of the milk you offered.”
And indeed, to this day, devotees in Pandharpur say that faint white lines can be seen near the deity’s lips—remnants of that divine milk.
Reflections – The Power of Loving Faith
- Faith Makes the Lord Alive
For the materialist, God is distant and silent. But for the devotee who loves Him like a friend, He becomes as close as the beating heart. Namdev’s tears made the stone image come alive. - Devotion Is Stronger Than Ritual
Countless offerings had been made before, but the Lord responded only to the simplicity of a son’s prayer for his mother. Bhakti is not a ceremony—it is the cry of love. - The Lord Honors Every Act of Love
The milk offered for Gonai became sacred because it was born from affection, not ambition. Whatever is done for God or His devotees never fades—it becomes eternal. - God Drinks the Essence, Not the Offering
The Lord accepts the devotion behind the act, not its material form. When the heart is pure, even a drop of milk becomes more precious than all the treasures of heaven. - Bhakti Transforms Suffering into Grace
Gonai’s illness brought forth her son’s faith, and through it, she was healed both in body and spirit. The Lord uses our pain to draw us nearer to Him.
