A Royal Puzzle
Akbar, fond of numbers, asked, “What is the total number of fools in my kingdom?” Birbal replied, “It’s hard to count without full investigation, but I have begun a list.”
The Twist in the Tale
He presented a paper listing “One—Your Majesty, for asking such a question.” The court gasped. But Birbal continued, “Two—myself, for answering it!” Everyone burst into laughter.
Akbar’s Grace
Amused and pleased, Akbar rewarded Birbal. “Your foolishness is wiser than the wisdom of most.”
Lesson to Be Learned
Real intelligence lies in humility and humor that uplifts. Kṛṣṇa-consciousness includes wit used in service. As Prabhupāda showed, a devotee is grave and joyful—serious in purpose, yet light of heart, always seeing Kṛṣṇa behind all events.
