The Pretentious Scholar
A self-proclaimed scholar came to Akbar’s court, flaunting his knowledge and quoting scriptures at length. Many were impressed by his confidence, but Birbal remained silent.
Birbal’s Simple Test
Birbal placed an empty pot before the man and said, “If you are full of wisdom, then fill this pot without spilling even a drop.” The man poured water, but it overflowed. Birbal smiled, “When pride enters, wisdom overflows and is lost.”
Humility Over Pride
The emperor understood the meaning. “Let us value wisdom that is humble and silent over that which shouts for praise.”
Lesson to Be Learned
Real wisdom is accompanied by humility. Pride is the enemy of spiritual advancement. As the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam declares, jñāna-vairāgya-yuktena bhakti-yogena yaḥ sevate — one who serves the Lord with humility and knowledge pleases Him the most.
