A Mother’s Dispute
One morning, two women came before Emperor Akbar, each claiming to be the mother of a beautiful child. They argued fiercely, both pleading for justice.
Birbal’s Divine Test
Akbar turned to Birbal for judgment. Calmly, Birbal ordered the child to be divided in half and one half given to each woman. At once, one woman cried out, “No, let her take the child—but don’t harm him!”
Truth Revealed Through Compassion
Birbal smiled. “She is the true mother. Only a real mother would rather give up her child than see him hurt.” The king was astonished and rewarded Birbal for his divine wisdom.
Lesson to Be Learned
True love is selfless. Like the gopīs of Vṛndāvana, who wanted only Kṛṣṇa’s happiness, a true devotee places the Lord’s joy above personal gain. Love without selfishness reflects the soul’s eternal nature.
