A Conflict Between Brothers
Two brothers came to the court, fighting over a tree. One claimed it was planted by their late father, the other insisted he alone had tended to it and now claimed ownership of all its fruits.

Birbal’s Judgment Beneath the Tree
Birbal brought them to the tree and asked each brother to water it. One did it happily, the other reluctantly. Then Birbal said, “This tree is like a parent. He who serves it with love is the true heir.”

Peace Restored
The court agreed. The brother who had selflessly cared for the tree was granted its ownership. Akbar declared, “Justice blossoms where service is found.”

Lesson to Be Learned
Ownership in this world is not based on inheritance but on responsibility and service. Similarly, in devotional life, the Lord bestows mercy upon those who serve without expectation. As Prabhupāda says, “Love means to give and serve, not to demand or possess.”
