The Wealthy but Proud Merchant
Śreṇika was a rich merchant known for his wealth and business acumen. However, he was also known for his arrogance and lack of respect for devotees of the Lord. He looked down on those who served Krishna with simplicity and humility.
Despite performing all external rituals, Śreṇika’s heart was hardened by pride.
Offending a Pure Devotee
One day, Śreṇika mocked a humble devotee who had come begging for alms. His harsh words and disrespect created a spiritual rift. This offense was not lost on the divine realm.
The Consequence: Spiritual Blindness
Soon after, Śreṇika began to lose the taste for devotional service. His chanting became mechanical, his rituals hollow. No matter how much wealth he had, his heart felt empty and restless. The Lord had withdrawn His mercy because of his offense.
A Turning Point: Humble Confession
Realizing his mistake, Śreṇika sought out the devotee he had insulted. Falling at his feet, he begged forgiveness with tears and complete humility.
The devotee, embodying mercy, accepted his apology. Gradually, Śreṇika’s spiritual vision returned. His chanting became heartfelt, and his service sincere.
