A Strange Request
Akbar once asked, “Who among my ministers will shave my beard while I am asleep?” All hesitated—fearing punishment if the emperor awoke.
Birbal Volunteers
Birbal offered to do it. That night, he tickled the king’s nose gently with a feather. As Akbar twitched and turned in sleep, Birbal carefully shaved the beard.
Skill and Sensitivity
In the morning, Akbar found his face smooth and fresh. Laughing, he praised Birbal, “You have the touch of a saint!”
Lesson to Be Learned
Devotional service requires sensitivity and attentiveness. Just as a servant pleases his master with love and care, a devotee seeks to serve the Lord with full consciousness. Sevonmukhe hi jihvādau svayam eva sphuraty adaḥ — The Lord reveals Himself to the loving servant.
