(From the Brahmāṇḍa Purāṇa, Uttara-khaṇḍa)

The Two Demonic Brothers

Long ago there lived a powerful demon named Kālanemi. He had two sons, Mārśana and Hārśana, who acquired immense strength through the chanting of secret mantras. Empowered by those vibrations, they became invincible. They tormented the demigods, Gandharvas, Yakṣas, and even humans.

When the devas could no longer endure their oppression, they chose Kārttikeya as their commander and declared war. But the brothers were too strong; even the goddess Kālika and her legions of yoginīs were defeated.

The Demigods Approach Lord Śiva

Helpless, the demigods went to Brahmā, but even he could not discern the cause of the demons’ invincibility. They then went to Lord Śiva, who entered deep meditation. By his yogic vision, he discovered the truth:

“These two have become unconquerable because they chant the Viṣṇu-mantra. Even Viṣṇu Himself cannot slay them, for He never harms His devotees. Only one power can stop them—the Supreme Goddess Herself, Śrī Rādhā, the Queen of Goloka.”

The Prayer to Rādhā

Led by Brahmā and Śiva, all the demigods journeyed to Goloka. Standing before its radiant gates, they sang hymns from the śruti-mantras in praise of Golokeśvarī Rādhā. Hearing their cries, She appeared, effulgent like millions of suns and moons combined.

The devas bowed and explained their plight. Śrī Rādhā smiled gently and summoned the Sudarśana-cakra with Her mind. The divine disc personified appeared, offering obeisances at Her lotus feet.

“O Sudarśana,” She said, “go forth and slay Mārśana and Hārśana, who are disturbing the balance of creation.”

At Her command, Sudarśana whirled through the sky, severed the demons’ heads, and restored peace to the universe.

Rādhārāṇī’s Aishvarya (Divine Majesty)

By this pastime, the supreme sovereignty of Śrī Rādhā was revealed. Even the Lord’s own weapon, Sudarśana, acts by Her command. In Goloka, She is not merely the consort of Kṛṣṇa—She is His very power, the ruler of all energies, the source of all protection and mercy.

Reflection

This story unveils a profound truth: all strength, all protection, and all victory come through the grace of Rādhārāṇī. Just as the demigods found refuge only at Her feet, our own hearts find peace only by surrendering to Her will.

Let us meditate:
“O Queen of Goloka, when my mind is tormented by the demons of desire and pride, please wield Your Sudarśana of compassion and destroy them. May I always remember that true victory is not through might but through surrender—to You and Your beloved Kṛṣṇa.”
