You are currently viewing Greed That Ruined the Family — The Story of Duryodhana

Duryodhana’s Offenses Against the Pāṇḍavas

Duryodhana, eldest of the Kauravas, was intensely greedy for the throne of Hastināpura. He viewed the Pāṇḍavas as threats and sought to eliminate them by any means:

  • Attempted to poison Bhīma as a child.
  • Tried to burn the Pāṇḍavas’ house alive.
  • Cheated them in a gambling match, usurping their kingdom.
  • Publicly humiliated Draupadī by trying to disrobe her.

Ignoring Advice and Offending Devotees

Despite wise counsel from elders, well-wishers, and even Lord Kṛṣṇa himself, Duryodhana remained obstinate:

  • He blasphemed Vidura, a great Vaiṣṇava, and banished him.
  • He insulted and attempted to arrest Kṛṣṇa when Kṛṣṇa came as a peace messenger.
  • His arrogance and offenses made peace impossible.

The Inevitable War

Arjuna hesitated to fight his own cousins, but Kṛṣṇa insisted that Duryodhana and his evil supporters be punished. Duryodhana’s refusal to share the kingdom made the devastating Kurukṣetra war unavoidable.

The Downfall and Its Lesson

Duryodhana lost everything—his kingdom, brothers, and his own life—due to his greed and offenses.

His story teaches that:

  • Even if devotees forgive offenders, the Lord does not tolerate offenses against His devotees.
  • Greed and pride lead to spiritual and material destruction.
  • Befriending and respecting devotees is the path to protection and salvation.

Practical Wisdom

  • Cultivate humility and friendship toward devotees.
  • Guard against greed and pride that cause offenses.
  • Follow the example of the Pāṇḍavas in devotion and righteousness.
