You are currently viewing Story 12 – At Bhavānīpur: The Image of the Divine Mother

After crossing the river, Raicharan continued his journey until he reached Bhavānīpur, a small village famous for its ancient shrine of the Divine Mother. The temple stood amidst groves of banyan and mango trees, its stone courtyard echoing with the chants of devotees and the scent of incense wafting through the air.

Raicharan felt drawn to the temple as if by an invisible force. Entering its sanctum, he saw the image of Śrī Bhavānī, shining in majesty and compassion — Her face serene, Her eyes full of mercy, Her hands bestowing blessings upon all. The flickering light of ghee lamps made Her appear alive, breathing, radiant.

He bowed low before the deity, and when he lifted his head, he felt as though the Mother were smiling directly at him. A strange warmth filled his heart, and his eyes overflowed with tears. He whispered, “O Mother, I have left everything — home, wealth, family — seeking You alone. Guide me, protect me, and make me Your instrument.”

He spent the night in the temple courtyard, absorbed in prayer. In the stillness of the early dawn, when the temple bells rang for the morning ārati, he again beheld the Divine Mother’s image. This time, Her expression seemed even more alive — Her gaze tender, Her presence enveloping him completely.

It was then that he felt a deep inner voice whisper within his heart:

“Go onward, My child. Your path will lead you to your Guru. Serve him as Me, and through him you will find Me.”

Raicharan folded his hands, bowed once more to the Mother, and set forth again, his heart burning with love and purpose.

Reflection

This divine encounter marks the awakening of surrender. Śrīla Prabhupāda explained that God responds to the devotee’s sincerity, not to outward show. When one approaches the Lord — or the Divine Mother — with humility and longing, the Lord reveals Himself, either through vision, voice, or deep conviction within the heart.

Raicharan’s experience in Bhavānīpur shows that the Divine Mother’s grace is not bound to ritual or tradition; it flows wherever there is faith. Her words guided him toward his Guru, for the Lord often manifests externally through the spiritual master to guide the disciple’s next steps.

This story reminds us that the journey of devotion is both inward and outward. We must bow at the temple of the heart, where God speaks in silence, and at the feet of the Guru, where His will is revealed in form.

To surrender to the Divine Mother means to let go of fear, to trust that every step we take in faith is guided by Her unseen hand.
