The Power and Devotion of Kartavirya Arjuna
Kartavirya Arjuna was a mighty king of the Haihaya dynasty, famous for his extraordinary strength and thousand arms. He ruled the powerful kingdom of Mahishmati with devotion and righteousness. Blessed by Lord Dattātreya, he possessed mystic perfections (siddhis) and had the power to defeat great demons like Rāvaṇa.
Despite his devotion and powers, Kartavirya Arjuna grew prideful and arrogant over time.
The Divine Cow Kāmadhenu and the Sage Jamadagni
Jamadagni Rishi was a great sage who owned the divine cow Kāmadhenu, capable of granting unlimited milk, grains, and wealth. The cow was meant solely for devotional purposes and sacrifices (yajñas).
One day, Kartavirya Arjuna visited Jamadagni’s āśrama during a hunting expedition. Seeing Kāmadhenu’s power, the king demanded the cow for his kingdom. Jamadagni humbly refused, explaining the cow’s sacred purpose.
The Offense and Seizure of Kāmadhenu
Blinded by pride, Kartavirya Arjuna forcefully took the divine cow from Jamadagni, offending the sage deeply. This act was a grievous offense against a pure devotee and a sacred gift.
The Role of Lord Paraśurāma
Jamadagni’s son, Lord Paraśurāma—an incarnation of Lord Vishnu—was enraged upon hearing about the offense. Armed with his divine axe (paraśu) blessed by Lord Shiva, Paraśurāma vowed to punish Kartavirya Arjuna for his adharma (unrighteousness).
The Battle and the Downfall of Kartavirya Arjuna
A fierce battle ensued between the two mighty warriors. Despite Kartavirya Arjuna’s thousand arms and army, Paraśurāma defeated him, severing his arms and ultimately killing him.
This divine act was justice for the offense committed against Jamadagni, demonstrating that no amount of power or devotion protects one from disrespecting the Lord’s devotees.
Aftermath and Vow of Paraśurāma
Paraśurāma vowed to rid the earth of corrupt kṣatriyas (warrior kings) twenty-one times over as purification, showing the seriousness of offenses against devotees and dharma.
